Reset vs. Factory Reset: What’s the Difference (and Which One Should You Use?)

Reset vs. Factory Reset

What’s the Difference?  Which One Should You Use?

If your PlayCube is acting “stuck” (frozen animation, onboarding won’t finish, downloads won’t move, or pairing is difficult) you can self-service your cubes by attempting a reset.

There are two different types of resets, and they do very different things:

- Normal Reset (quick restart): safe first step for most issues
- Factory Reset (full wipe): a stronger fix that erases all user data

Here’s how to choose the right one.

A) Normal Reset (Bottom Reset Button)

What you do:

You press the reset button on the bottom of the cube.

What it means:

This is basically a quick restart / reboot (like turning a device off and back on).

It does not wipe your content or progress.

When to use it (best first step ✅)

Use Normal Reset first for most “stuck” behaviors, including:

- Stuck screens or frozen animations
- Wi-Fi onboarding stuck
- Download stuck
- Pairing weirdness or glitches

Tip: If something feels off but you’re not sure why, start here.

B) Factory Reset (The “Big One”)

What you do:

You follow the full button sequence (as shown in the video) until you see a check mark.   It's important to look at all the directions before you begin.

  1. Get Ready: Make sure your PlayCube is turned ON and hold it facing you.

  2. Press & Hold: Locate the Back Corner Button (the button facing away from you). Press and hold it down.

  3. Trigger the Reset: While still holding the Back Button, turn the cube over and gently press the Reset Button on the bottom using your pin.

  4. Wait for the Signal: Keep holding the Back Button until you see a White Diamond shape appear on the screen.

  5. Confirm the Action: Release the Back Button and immediately press and hold the Right Button until a White Check Mark appears.

  6. Let it Process: You can now set the cube down. You will see a star animation filling up on the screen. This process may take a few minutes.

  7. Completion: Once the reset is finished, a Green Smiley Face will appear.

  8. Restart: Press the Reset button on the bottom one last time to restart your PlayCube. It is now fresh and ready to be set up again!

What it means:

A Factory Reset is a full wipe:

- Erases games, progress, files, and stored data
- Formats memory
- Reloads default system assets

The downside:

Because it wipes everything, it can:

- Delete progress
- Accidentally unpair cubes if steps are not followed in order

When to use it ✅

Factory Reset is best for more serious or persistent issues like:

- Corrupted visuals (example: random colored dots)
- Weird behavior that continues even after multiple normal resets
- Corrupted files from shipping or storage problems

Tip to avoid accidental unpairing

When doing a Factory Reset,
hold the cube by the back corner - not the middle of the back button area.

Why this matters: holding the corner helps prevent accidental side-button presses (the “teeter-totter” effect), which can cause cubes to unpair.

Quick Decision Guide

If your cube is
stuck or glitchyNormal Reset first

If you see corruption or nothing improves after resets → Factory Reset
